Data Darbar: A Holy place or Haven for Runaways?

What happens on such a staggering magnitude in lahore’s Data Darbar, occurs daily on a smaller scale elsewhere without outraged editorials being written or inquiry committees being formed. We as a society are simply not prepared to concede that sexual and mental frustration regularly leads to deviant acts among both sexes. Indeed, the whole subject of underground social evils is practically taboo: very little scholarly work has been done in this area, and journalists tend to tread warily around the whole question.

As Lahore is known as “Data ki Nagri” in laymen’s term. People form all over the country belonging from all sects of society come to Data Darbar to pay ‘Salam’ to the great saint. The act has been part of their traditions and has been present since generations. Commonly the belief makes the runaway children and adults think that they will be protected and sheltered by the grace of ‘Data Sahib’. These runaway people stay at Data Darbar not with the motive of religious practice; instead, they find ways of hiding from their respective families and any official authority that are in search of them.

“People come to Data Darbar because they get food, secondly they have a place to live, and people outside Lahore have only one thing in mind that Lahore has Data Darbar where everything is available.”(Kashif, an official from the Child promotion bureau)

Why do they end up in Data Darbar, why not in any other place? Most runaway children and even adults come from cities that include Sheikhupura (sharakpur), Kohat, Rahim Yar Khan, Multan and Rawalpindi. When entering Lahore through the Ravi River, Data Darbar is the very first place that attracts them because of its lush socio-economic culture in their minds.

Almost everybody in rural areas knows about the importance of Data Darbar’s presence in Lahore. Men, women and even children living presently at Data Darbar are so content with their lives there, that unconsciously they attract others of their area and convince them through peer pressure to accompany them to the Darbar’s so called extravagant life. Lungar is considered to be source of food for the devotees and residents sheltering at Data Darbar.

The boys, most aged between eight and fifteen, sleep close together for safety and comfort as night falls and the dinner of lentils and roti from the data darbar huge lungar is eaten. (Mean streets – Lahore’s runaway children, (Monday, September 20, 2004), Daily Times)

If we talk about the causes of people running away or even leaving homes they can be uncountable. Few causes are huge family concept; that makes them feel neglected, poverty (they may be sent by families to work in urban areas and send money back home), and freedom of living.

‘I left home when I was ten, says hafeez, now nearly twenty. He has never since visited his parents, who live in a village near Sheikhupura, around hundred kilometers from Lahore. Hafeez says his father is a drug addict and he just couldn’t take the constant beating anymore. (Mean streets – Lahore’s runaway children, (Monday, September 20, 2004), Daily Times)

Is it just our ignorance, government’s inefficiency or any other factor behind the menace?

Most of the visitors are not interested in knowing about the happenings around Data Darbar because they don’t feel that they are being victims. Even if somebody witnesses such acts they are turning a blind eye and are doing nothing to eradicate such evils from Darbar and its adjacent area.

‘We offer our prayers there; recite from the Quran all night (Thursday) and replenish ourselves from the daily lungar and return home the next day after dawn.’ Says Akram Shah, a clerk. (Mir. A. (July, 10th 2006) , Data Ganj Shrine a big draw in Lahore, World India.)

Police is usually blamed by the media and visitors for making the social crimes flourish at Data Darbar. Usually they are seen eating at one of the hotel nearby, or drinking lemonade at a stall, in total oblivion of whatever is happening around them.

According to the observation during the visits to Data Darbar , I noticed from the attitude of police officials that they have given up hope of improving the situation regarding masses indulged in social evils due to adjoining social crime hubs such as Heera Mandi, porno- mini cinemas, Minar-e-Pakistan, etc.

  1. If one looks at the Islamic perspective it is clear that there is no such culture of durbars or tombs where people should be going to pray. Mosques are the places designated by Allah almighty and our Holy Prophet (SAW) for praying to almighty Allah and asking for day to day needs. Even the teachings of these great scholars of Islam whose tombs are being misused now a days never had any such instructions. These people dedicated their lives for finding the truth and trying to reach self actualization. However things have been misinterpreted and portrayed in a false way by few to our ignorant masses, who without knowing anything about religion are following blindly and causing a major damage to society as well as religion and themselves. Actually it all started as Hindus largely influenced our culture before partition and the impressions still continue.Government should take concrete steps to curb such practices and let these places be just a memorial of these great saints rather than places of worship.

  2. well to some extent but in the end we have to respect the believes of people. as muslims it is our duty to respect other religions too. therefore over here i really cannot comment on the fact how the concept of self actualization is misinterpreted but yes we as a society and our government have closed eyes towards such menace. if you ever get a chance to visit these areas and walk around the adjacent areas, you'll come across so disturbing sights that one cannot do justice in explaining them in words.i have seen people taking last breaths on the road but sill asking for one puff of cigerette...
children who are such experts that one of the official quotes that they have caught children taking money out of the "Nazrana Box" with the help of "Jharo ka tinka"...i wish they could have used their creativity and innovation in something productive.

    1. I agree with you that as Muslims we must respect other Religions, sects, schools of thought etc... These Shrines are signs of historic importance as well as architectural beauty and we must preserve them but also have the utmost respect for those buried within them and take wisdom and heed from their amazing examples and teachings Insha'Allah

  3. Good job on the blog xenuuu!!
In my opinion, one must acknowledge the historical significance of darbars and shrines. These darbars were made in honor of those people who did a great job in creating strongly knit community, whether through spreading religion, solving problems, disseminating enlightenment and the works. Also, I love these places in terms of the art and the culture and the architecture that they reflect.
There was that experiment where in the hoods in New York city, a new place was well kept, any vandalism that took place there, was immediately fixed and in less then 2 months time, nobody was vandalizing the property anymore.
If WE (not just someone other then ourselves which is the typical pakistani mentality) focus our energy more on preserving these places, I am pretty sure that the number of less fortunate events that take place there will reduce dramatically. Like a said, breaking windows of a run down broken shack is way easier then for a brand new strongly built one.

  5. Research is no doubt really good!

It is true that these places are highly misused for “shirk”. In Islam there is no such concept of tombs.

If the start is wrong how can we expect happy ending!

We can be surprised by knowing the religious concepts of people there, considering paying “Salam” there can do anything even if they didn’t follow religious “Faraiz”

  6. A great article indeed. I just went to Daata Darbar once but when I saw the common practice of shirk I almost cried. People were bowing to the graves. Kissing the graves wildly. For God sake these are graves of Dead people. I know they were one of the greatest people alive at their time but now that they are dead people should not make their graves idols to worship.

  7. praying at Darbar is a big sin and shirk. Most people know it but they still fell in the darkness of it. One must take in account, the live of our beloved Holy Prophet(S.A.W) and the khalifas. There is no such account of going to Darbars to pray. However, one must try to stop them in getting more addicted to this work because if we didn't no one will.

  8. Dear Blogger , You should visit in Lahore and see with your open eyes Darbar Of Data Sahib , if someone do sin in your town this is not your act for blaming. Data sahib will not responsible for your and all other sin.
